Save The Date: Coldest Night of the Year

On Saturday, February 23, be a part of the nationwide movement to fight poverty. Join with us as we walk to help the homeless, hungry and hurting across Canada. We have a goal of raising $50,000 to help hurting people in Welland. Will you register today and help us meet that goal?

Gather your friends, colleagues, small group or family together to form a team. Choose a team name (maybe Freezin for a Reason?). Don't have any friends? You can be our friend and join the team "Open Arms Mission Friends." Register at

Choose to walk 2km, 5km or 10km or choose to volunteer. We have a lot of volunteer positions, both outside on the street, cheering on the walkers and indoors. High school and college students can get volunteer hours.

Then set a fundraising goal (on average each walker raises about $250). Every adult who raises over $150 gets one of the famous Coldest Night of the Year toques (children 11-17 $75 minimum, 10 and under free). You can fundraise if you are walking or volunteering. We've had walkers who were too little to walk and one gentleman who is celebrating his 92 birthday at CNOY this year (Go Fred!), it is truly an event for all ages!

Next, start fundraising! The website has great videos and images you can share on social media, but the best ask is personal. You can print out a pledge sheet and ask the old fashioned way, face to face. Ask your grandma, cousin, boss, best friend from high school, client, next door neighbour, the person who sits next to you at church... (you get the idea). You'll be surprised at how well people respond to a good cause. People know the need in Welland and want to do something about it. You can give them the opportunity.

You can track your progress on the awesome website. You can compare your progress and compete with other teams and friends or even to other cities and people far away. There are Coldest Night of the Year walks taking place in 135 cities across Canada. All walking on the same night. This walk is going to change Canada.

Our new start/finish location this year is Civic Square (City Hall)! Registration opens at 4:00pm. You bring your pledge form or printout from the website with all your online donations. Everyone who walks must register. If you don't hit the minimum fundraising goal ($150 for adults, $75 for youth 11-17, no min for 10 and under), you will need to pay a registration fee. Day of registration fee is $40. Parking in the lot behind Civic Square is free on Saturdays and it is very close to the bus station.

The opening ceremonies will be at 5:00pm and the walk will begin at 5:15pm. The 5km and 10km (2 loops of the 5km) will have a rest stop at Redeemed Goods, our thrift store, where you can warm up with a hot drink and use the restrooms. After the walk, come back to Civic Square for some chili, made by the culinary arts students at Confederation High School.
